By producing an enormous number of cheaply made garments each year—designed to last only a few wears—the fast fashion industry drives a cycle of constant consumption and disposal. Although several EU countries have systems for collecting discarded textiles, not all of the collected items necessarily end up in sustainable processes.
Arisa’s new publication, The Fast Fashion Waste Mountain, brings together key facts and figures on what happens to our discarded clothes—from when we toss them to where all that textile waste ends up. It shows the various ways our discarded textiles are collected and handled in the EU, and how ‘our’ waste travels beyond borders, impacting the environment and communities around the world.
